Ten hidden ways you’re wasting money in the kitchen

If you address the following ten areas, you might be able to stop wasting money in your kitchen and tidy up your expenses when it comes to your shopping, electricity and water bills.

  1. Fridge coils: These behind-the-scenes fridge elements can add $15-$20 to your power bill each month if covered in grime and dust by making the fridge far less efficient.
  2. Not checking your home supplies: Prior to shopping check what you have in the home! This is a super easy way to avoid accidentally spending money and ending up with double ups.
  3. Correct storage: Where you store your food and how you store your food can affect how long it will last. This in turn can cause more wastage then necessary.
  4. Use by vs best before dates: Products should never be used past their use by date. However, best before dates are still okay for a little while after. Just make sure it has been stored correctly.
  5. Disposables instead of reusable:  Using reusable options instead of single use can save money in the long run. These include paper towels, plastic bags and plastic wrap.
  6. Pre-rinsing dishes: Whilst you may think pre-rinsing is necessary, this is not actually the case. Pre-rinsing wastes a huge amount of water. It also effects the quality of your dishwasher, as it means your dishwasher won’t clean as well because it will detect less dirty dishes.
  7. Switch off your microwave: Even on standby the microwave is using power. Switching this off and other standby appliances can really lower your power consumption.
  8. Being mindful of usage: Dishwashing power, detergent and other cleaning products are frequently overused and then are replaced too frequently, costing you more money.
  9. Repair your leaks: as tempting as it is to ignore that pesky leak it can really add up in terms of volume and water cost.
  10. Always choosing the oven: in terms of cooking equipment the oven is the most expensive appliance to run. Instead consider smaller appliances such as the microwave, griller, or toaster.
