Winter activities

Braving the cold in winter can be a challenge for many! So, when the doom and gloom of winter hits, what activities can you do to keep you active and mentally challenged? We have some great ideas to keep you motivated and active!

Winter festivals

Throughout winter you will probably find that there are some local activities in your community, such as winter markets, festivals and pop-up winter activities, such as outdoor ice skating, winter igloos and more. Get online and search for some of these activities and make plans with family or friends.

Hiking

Check out your local hiking trails. Dig out your hiking boots, grab a friend and take the challenge. Hiking can be a great activity to warm you up in the cooler months and it can often be too hot to do it in the summer months It keeps you active, is social and gets you out in nature which has many health benefits in itself – read our blog on time outdoors here.

Textiles

Knitting, crochet and sewing are great indoor activities for the cooler months. Do it at home or join a local club and meet new friends.

Winter holiday

Plan and book a winter getaway. This may be a holiday that takes advantage of the winter, such as visiting snowfields, or maybe it’s a trip to somewhere warmer, such as a tropical paradise.

DIY

Get some of those inside DIY tasks done in your downtime during the cooler months. See our blog on Winter DIY Projects here.

Gardening

Winter gardening involves different activities to those done in the warmer months. It’s all about weeding, winter vegetables, cleaning up, some pruning, tending to your garden tools and more. Check out this list of winter garden tasks to get done this winter.

Cooking

Try a new recipe, make sour dough bread or do some batch cooking. Having the oven on can help warm up the house and baking bread or cookies is a fun thing to do in winter. Bake alone or with grandchildren and enjoy the results yourself, freeze for another time or make someone’s day by making a gift of them.

Declutter

We have many declutter articles that can help you with this process, and winter is a great time to do this with less distractions than the summer months! Check out things to declutter from your home today here.

Read

Visit your local bookshop or library and grab a stack of books to read at home when the chills hit! You could even look at joining a book club.

 New hobby or skill

Winter is a great time to try something new. Consider taking a class in a new hobby, such as painting, photography, or cooking, or join a community group or sporting club. You never know what you might learn or who you might meet.

Movie marathon

Why not ‘binge-watch’ a new tv show or movie series when it’s a cold and wintery day. It’s a fun indoor activity that allows you to stay warm and cosy up on the couch.

Winter sport games

Why not support your local football team this winter and attend some games. You may even make some new friends on the sidelines!
